Chelmsford City Racecourse (CCR) opened in January 2015 and is the only horse racing venuein Essex. The racecourse consists of an 8 furlong left-handed oval with large 135m+ sweeping bends.
The track measures 22m in width and finishes with a 2 furlong home straight.Over £600,000 has been spent on upgrading the racing surface since the racecourse opened, including are-wax of the Polytrack to enhance its binding properties,the addition of a chute to create the popular 7f start, and in 2018 a replenishment of fibre through the whole track profile.
Its racing programme currently contains the highest percentage of Class 1-4 AWT races in Britain. Since 2018 Chelmsford City Racecourse has also hosted Britain's most valuable evening fixture with over £233,000 on offer, as well as staging its first ever £100,000 race – the 7f Chelmsford City Cup.
In a year of firsts, CCR also ran its inaugural Listed race, the £75,000 Queen Charlotte Stakes for fillies and mares, in June.
As well as catering for elite horses, care is taken to ensure prize money is spread across the whole spectrum of equine participants with most Class 4 to 6 races being run at BHA’s maximum permitted levels.
The track is illuminated by the distinctive champagne flute floodlights exclusive to Chelmsford City Racecourse. Viewing the racing is well catered for with some great vantage points around the venue and the permanent big screen in front of the grandstand.
